This History of San Pablo Seminary

The San Pablo Presbyterian Theological Seminary has deep roots in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The San Pablo Presbyterian Theological Seminary was organized by the Respectable Synod of the Gulf of Mexico on September 19, 1982. In 1985, the same Synod of the Gulf opened another center in the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco, which became independent in 1987 as The Theological Seminary of the Southeast. In 1987, with the formation of the Respectable Synod of the Peninsula ,the San Pablo Presbyterian Theological Seminary left the Respectable Synod of the Gulf and became an institution of the Respectable Synod of the Peninsula.

The predecessors of San Pablo Presbyterian Theological Seminary have been the educational programs known as “Rural Seminar” as much of the Peninsular Presbytery as with the Mayab Presbytery. In the 1970s, the Seminary for Extension was established, primarily under the auspices of the Mayab Presbytery, formerly integrated into the program of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary of Mexico. In its early years, San Pablo Presbyterian Theological Seminary used the installations of El Divino Salvador Church for its classes, the house of the Legter family, the building on Call 61 No. 529 and the House of David and Jonathan as dorms, offices, cafeteria, and library. In September of 1993, we moved to the campus location at Km. 2 on highway Merida-Dzitya. In 2008, the program for Masters in Theological Studies began, oriented for the ministerial improvement of pastors and leaders in the presbyterian field. In the 2010s, it was consolidated into the diplomas of Youth Ministry and Christian Counseling, both of which focus on the preparation of Christians for ministry in the local church. In this same decade, other diverse extensions of San Pablo PTS began to operate in the creation of the Degree in Theological Studies, opening centers in Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo), Merida (Calle 61), and Cordoba (Veracruz).

These extension centers operated as short-term projects coordinated by San Pablo and at the request of the interested presbyteries, with the goal of regulating or certifying ministers that would possess previous studies of theology that are in local biblical institutes or schools endorsed by the presbyteries. In 2015, a cooperation agreement was filed with the University of Alpha and Omega in Tabasco, opening the career of Degree in Philosophy. This same year, an agreement was made with Third Millennium Ministries to create a certification of its courses for the hispanic public. Third Millenium Ministries provides the programs and multimedia platform and San Pablo PTS provides the participants their certificate in Theological Studies. In the position of President of the Seminary, the following brothers have served: Rev. David Legters M., Rev Alberto Tuyub Chuc, Rev. Edesio Sanchez Sanchez, Rev. Aaron Zapata Ruiz, Rev. Ricardo Santana Rivaas, Rev. Wilburt Madera Rivas, and Rev. Amos Cahuich Yam.
